Office 2016 Mac Junk Email

In a new blog post today, Microsoft’s Tastia Ebacher explained how Microsoft is handling junk mail on Outlook 2016 for the Mac. As expected, Outlook 2016 for Mac will come with a handful of new features compared to Outlook 2011 for Mac. The upcoming Outlook update relies on server-side filtering for junk mail, rather than relying on client-side filtering. Microsoft expects server-side filtering to cut down on your junk mail, and hopefully Outlook 2016 for Mac will improve junk mail filtering.

I am using outlook-2016 in my environment. My Junk Folder is move into the contacts suddenly and there also in that folder I am getting mails. But I am able to see Junk Folder in OWA App. Is there is any way, so that I can use it normally as I was. Regards, Shashank. It turned out that I had to go directly to the email source's website, which in this case was Gmail, and change my junk settings there. Apple Mail was perceiving the incoming mail as 'Not Junk', but because Gmail was viewing it as junk, it was still going to my Apple Mail junk folder. Outlook 2016 for Mac doesn’t provide any client-side junk mail protection for any kind of an account (Exchange, POP, or IMAP). Instead, it only relies on the mail server to perform all junk mail filtering. Email messages are not scanned client-side by Outlook 2016 for Mac to determine whether they are junk mail. Created a new profile for just the support@ email. Issue persists.using both a new data pst file and the old 1.7GB pst file. If I uncheck Delivery Remove from server in 14 days.keeping Leave a copy of the message on the server checked.emails 'stick' in the inbox on the server and the other 2 users get all the mail from this support@ account. Don’t move email to Junk Folder: e-mail messages will not be filtered; Automatic filter Junk E-mail: You can add the block senders list or email address/ domains to safe sender’s and recipients. Click on save to apply changes. These 3 methods allow you to disable the grayed out Junk folder in Outlook and you can check messages in Junk.

Microsoft has also published a comparison of Outlook for Mac 2011 and Outlook 2016 for Mac junk email protection options:

Unlike Outlook 2011 for Mac, there is no client-side junk mail filtering in the 2016 version. Instead, all filtering is done at the server level, before the mail has even reached your Inbox. However, you can still use the Mark as Junk, Not Junk, or Block Sender options from within Outlook 2016 for Mac. To do so, select the relevant message, then under the Home tab, look for the Junk icon and choose one of the options from the dropdown menu. You can also right-click on the relevant message and choose the Junk Mail option from the dropdown list, or choose the Rules option to set up a rule that determines what happens the next time you receive mail from that sender.

NOTE: you will notice from the screen shot above that “Junk Email Preferences” is greyed out. This is because those settings are managed from the Exchange server. You can log into your Office 365 webmail account to manage some of these settings, such as editing a blocked senders list.
